The Academy's Certification Program
One of the primary ways the Academy pursues its mission is by a Certification Program of individuals who apply for Academy membership. An applicant submits specified credentials and documentation that are reviewed against the criteria and standards set by the Academy for four different levels of professional achievement and competency. Selected criteria for each of these membership categories appear below. Persons interested in any given category should request details of membership criteria and requirements from the Academy.
Subscriber member.
Must have completed an Academy approved course of at least 10 hours that
provides an overview of the Orton-Gillingham approach, the phonology and structure of English, characteristics of
dyslexia, multisensory teaching, and a lesson demonstration.
Associate
member. Will have a bachelor's degree and have completed 100 hours of a supervised practicum, teaching
one-on-one under an Academy Fellow. Will have completed 60 hours of course work in the curriculum prescribed by the
Academy. Two letters of support, one from the applicant's principal trainer, are required. Persons accepted as Associate
members are judged by the Academy to be qualified to instruct students using the Orton-Gillingham approach subject to
the supervision of an Academy Fellow.
Certified
member. Must have completed all the requirements for Associate membership plus 200 additional hours of
Orton-Gillingham teaching under the supervision of an Academy Fellow. Will have completed 100 additional hours of
academic work in areas which may be comprised of work directly under a Fellow; attendance at relevant conferences and
seminars; or Academy accredited courses; and two letters of support, one from
the applicant's principal trainer, are required. The Academy judges a Certified member to be qualified to instruct individuals and to teach
groups using the Orton-Gillingham approach but not qualified to independently train and supervise others to be
Orton-Gillingham practitioners.
Fellow of the Academy. Will have met the requirements stipulated for Certified members plus at least 6 years as an Orton-Gillingham practitioner. The years, depth, and range of professional experience of those applying for Fellow status will be reviewed carefully. Other requirements include relevant documentation and two letters of support, master's degree or its equivalent, attendance at approved local, regional, or national conferences or seminars, and a presentation at an approved regional or national conference. A Fellow of the Academy is judged to be qualified to train and supervise others aspiring to be trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach.
Application Forms - Subscriber, Associate, Certified,
and Fellow Membership
Application forms required for each level of individual membership in the Academy can be accessed from this page using Adobe Reader. Persons who intend to apply should print the necessary forms from this source. First read Notice to Applicant and then proceed to the appropriate membership level.
Please note that the documentation called for in these application forms relies heavily upon training provided by Fellows of the Academy. A partial listing of such training opportunities is to be found in Where to Get Orton-Gillingham Training? Persons interested in Academy membership at any level, who have yet to complete training requirements, should discuss any prospective training with the responsible Academy Fellow to determine how the training may meet or help meet Academy membership requirements.
