Continuing Education Unit (CEU) Requirements

Overview of OGA Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

The Academy recognizes that there are many worthwhile opportunities to earn professional CEUs, and we encourage you to pursue them. The OGA requirement of 1 CEU is a minimal requirement of 10 contact hours that strengthens your alignment with the Academy.  As a new initiative, the CEU committee was very careful in crafting precise guidelines to begin slowly. The committee will look into other CEUs in the upcoming years.

The submission of CEU documentation began in January 2021 with the renewal of your membership dues. For example, CEUs accrue from the date of your previous certification renewal date to your 2021 renewal date when you submit the documentation with your dues payment.

CEUs ARE REQUIRED FOR ASSOCIATE, CERTIFIED, AND FELLOW LEVEL MEMBERS.

There are two ways to submit the CEU Record Sheet:

  1. Upload the completed CEU Record Sheet from a link in the member section of the Academy’s website.
or  (Click here for the link)
  2.  Mail the CEU Record Sheet to the Academy office:
OGA, PO Box 234, Amenia, NY 1250

A copy of the CEU Recored Sheet is located at the bottom of this page.

1.    Why will the OGA require CEUs for members at the Associate, Certified, and Fellow levels?

  • All high-quality professional member organizations require CEUs. CEUs show that members are staying current in their field by actively engaging in Academy and other approved professional development opportunities and are staying current and competent with their Orton-Gillingham professional skills and knowledge.
  • Retired, dues-paying OGA members who are no longer working with students, training, or supervising practicum are exempt from maintaining CEUs.

2.     What is a CEU?

  • Continuing Education Units are the contact hours earned through professional development.  Each contact hour earns .10 or 1/10 of a CEU.  One CEU represents 10 contact hours.

3.     What professional development is considered valid for OGA CEU credits?

  • All OGA webinars, newsletters, website articles, conferences
  • Fellow presentations, webinars, workshops, or lectures given in any venue (for example at an IDA conference)
  • All coursework hours and time spent on required readings in pursuit of the next level of OGA credentialing
  • Items from any level of current OGA reading lists
  • Fellow or FIT preparation time for courses, conferences, and workshops

4.     How many CEUs or contact hours are required?

  • 10 contact hours, one CEU credit, is required annually
  • CEUs are submitted with the renewal of membership and OGA certificate
  • Hours must be accrued during each renewal cycle. The renewal cycle is one year.
  • The renewal cycle is calculated by the membership certificate year. For example, if dues are paid in March 2020, CEU documentation for the year is submitted in March 2021.

5.     Who will keep track of the CEUs earned?

  • Members are responsible for obtaining and maintaining all documentation of contact hours for CEU credit.
  • Members will only submit the CEU Record Sheet to AOGPE with yearly membership renewal.

6.     Is there a fee to accrue CEUs?

  • There is no fee beyond the yearly membership renewal. However, a registration fee may be required by sponsors of particular events.

7.     When will this CEU requirement become effective?

  • Beginning in January 2021 as membership renewal becomes due.

8.     Refer to the OGA CEU Policy and Procedures outlined below for full details.
