Garside Institute for Teacher Training at The Carroll School

This course fulfills the Academy’s 70-hour coursework requirement for Associate Level Certification. The additional 30 hours of coursework include supplementary Orton-Gillingham theory and practice, and seminars on assessment giving an overview of the new WISC-V, as well as other curriculum-based assessment tools. The course includes a seminar on
the current brain research that informs the Carroll School Targeted Cognitive Intervention
Program.

The Academic Year Course provides 90 hours of coursework and approximately 260 hours of supervised practicum, totaling approximately 350 contact hours. The course is nationally accredited by the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA).

Trainees will teach reading and spelling skills using the Orton-Gillingham approach, a structured alphabetic-phonetic system that employs visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic pathways to learning. Reading and spelling are treated as interacting disciplines. Using the Orton-Gillingham approach, trainees will learn to individualize tutoring sessions with students. Throughout the course, trainees will attend a weekly two-hour coursework seminar.
